The form of the Orthodox cross comprises two distinct elements, each one separate but also and integral part of the other. Christ's crucifixion occupies the central position and the main theme. At left Mary Magdalen grieves with her head bowed and an attendant behind her. While on the right St. John looks up imploringly, as does St. George 'the Victor', standing behind John holding a spear. The crucifixion is the 'worldly' aspect of the scene, though there is a sense something supernatural is about to occur. From above God the Father looks down from heaven, offering His blessings, while two angels prostrate themselves to God and Jesus. At the bottom, the cruel ground of Golgotha is graphically depicted, with the skull of Adam in the center. Touches of white contribute to the 'otherworldy' nature of the setting, which is both the light of day and the light of heaven. - (PF.5256)
